Your Baby Is Already Making Memories. New Research Shows Us Where.

Most of us cannot remember anything before age three or four. For years, the common explanation was simple: babies do not really form memories yet. Their brains are too new, too busy growing, too unfinished.


New research says otherwise.


A study published in Science by researchers at Yale looked directly at what happens inside a baby's brain in the moment a memory is made. The team scanned 26 awake babies between four and 25 months old using fMRI, a technology that tracks blood flow in the brain. Each baby was shown a series of faces, objects, and scenes. Moments later, those same images reappeared alongside brand new ones, and the researchers tracked how long each baby looked at each image. Babies look longer at something they recognize.



Here is what they found. When a baby later recognized an image, their brain had shown stronger activity the first time they saw it. That activity appeared in the posterior hippocampus, the very same region adults use to form lasting personal memories. The effect was strongest in babies past their first birthday.


In other words, babies are not blank. They are encoding.


So why do we forget?


The researchers suggest that infant amnesia may be less about failing to make memories and more about losing the ability to retrieve them later. The memory gets written. The path back to it fades as the brain rapidly reorganizes itself through the toddler years.


This is a meaningful shift in how we think about the earliest years. It means the experiences a child has at eight months or 14 months are not simply passing through. They are being processed by the same machinery that will one day hold a first day of school and a favorite birthday.


What this means for the way we teach

Every session is designed with intention. When a child tracks a moving object, reaches across their midline, recognizes a shape, or hears a word paired with an image, they are not just playing. They are building the neural pathways that support attention, memory, motor coordination, and early literacy. The brain is laying track. Our job is to make sure that track goes somewhere useful.


That is also why our classes stay small. Purposeful play only works when it is matched to the individual child, to the skill they are ready for right now, in the window when their brain is most receptive to it. A room of twenty children moving through the same routine cannot do that. A small group with a coach who knows your child can.



A note for parents of the youngest ones


If you have a baby under one and you have wondered whether it is too early to start something structured, this research is worth sitting with. The encoding is already happening. The question is not whether your baby is learning. It is what they are learning, and how deliberately.


You do not need your child to remember a specific class. What matters is what those repeated, purposeful experiences build underneath: stronger attention, better motor control, faster recognition, and a brain that is practiced at learning itself. Those things do not fade. They compound.


Your child will not remember being one. But their brain will carry what you gave them anyway.
